back

So, someone asked for the new B.I.G. album. I looked at the track list, and honestly, there isn't anything on "Greatest Hits" that you'd want that isn't on the two albums he released around the time he was alive.

The Notorious B.I.G. - "Ready To Die" (1994)

If you already have those, "Blue Eyes Meets Bed Stuy," is a good, extravagant, mashup of Frank Sinatra and Frank Wallace. Most of the tracks are actually right on--its equally savage and cringeworthy to hear Biggie over twinkling piano. What can I say, I like it.

screw cochella

The sad truth is that none of us are going to Cochella. Yes, I know, it was fun to talk about for a little, but it just isn't happening. The San Francisco ≠ Indio part of the equation and the $700 trip total just didn't work out.

GOOD NEWS. Rock The Bells (SF, Aug. 18) is going to kill it.

Peep this lineup

It's not clear who is playing where outside of NY; but yea, DOOM, Murs, The Roots, Ghost + Wu Tang, etc.

Pandas

2 panda bands (one by request) for your enjoyment.

Giant Panda - Fly School Reunion

Giant Panda, who I first listened to 18 hours ago, rips pretty hard. The short story: one white guy, one black guy, and one Japanese guy (wildcard!!). It's good alternative hip-hop that goes down easy and stays with you. (myspace)

Panda Bear - Person Pitch

Okay. So everyone listened to the Shins's new album "Wincing the Night Away," (download). The most common reaction was oh, that sounds just like the Shins. While "Wincing" doesn't really screw up anywhere, it isn't overwhelmingly progressive or interesting.

Panda Bear's "Person Pitch" is. Yes, it has 12 minute tracks that wander around a lot. Yes, it isn't polished. But it sounds like the god damn Beach Boys on Novocain. So, basically, if "Wincing" didn't do it for you, give this a try. It's not crafted for universal appeal. So, don't complain that it doesn't sound like the Shins. It is, however, hella catchy, and actually, really solid. (hat tip: Madeleine Luise) (myspace)
